Digestive Issues

Do you struggle with reflux, gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea or just feel “yuck”? Unfortunately, many Americans feel this way. Proton pump inhibitor prescriptions sharply increased by 432% between 2007 and 2016 and many of these patients still have not found a solution to their GI distress. Research has proven that the gut is the foundation of wellness – when the gut is inflamed, the rest of the body is inflamed. Our approach to treating digestive complaints centers around addressing four common causes of dysfunction: stress, toxins, food sensitivities and infections of the gut. We utilize advanced stool testing to uncover many chronic infections that, for most, have persisted for years. Based on information we gather from your history and testing, we customize a treatment plan including diet changes, herbal treatments as well as prescription treatments (when necessary). You can learn more about gut health and our approach on our podcast episode here: “Busting Medical Myths: Leaky gut isn’t real.”

Digestive Issues

Digestive problems are often considered chronic conditions that persist for life. A conventional approach to treatment involves attempting to reduce the symptoms by giving medications, especially during flare-ups. Functional medicine differs by asking “why” the gut problems exist in the first place. Perhaps there is an unknown food allergy or sensitivity that is wreaking havoc on the gut or there may be an imbalance of beneficial and dysbiotic bacteria. We run state of the art stool testing that pinpoints previously unidentified infections and inflammation of the gut which allows us to formulate a plan to heal the gut which results in a resolution of symptoms.

Hormonal Imbalance

Do you feel like your hormones are betraying you? Are you suffering from brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, sleep issues or just feel like you are falling apart?! We completely understand! As we get older and experience life stressors, lack of sleep, growing families et cetera, our hormones shift and sometimes it is not for the better!! Or maybe your situation is a little different and you have struggled with hormonal imbalance your entire life resulting in acne, painful or heavy periods, weight gain, irregular periods, etc.

There are many factors that are involved in hormonal balance including stress, nutrition, thyroid function, proper detoxification, and overall hormone levels. We approach hormonal problems by taking an extensive history and evaluating every aspect that is contributing to hormonal imbalance. We utilize comprehensive urine, salivary and serum testing to analyze your overall hormone balance and detox pathways. And yes! We treat men as well!

Hormonal Imbalance

Waco Center for Functional Medicine uses Functional Medicine tools to identify and heal imbalance at its source. As we evaluate your overall health, we look at how stress, thyroid, and sex hormones interact with your gut and detox systems. Our treatments include both hormonal and non-hormonal elements, such as herbs and supplements. We can create, restore, and maintain good health with your active participation and our wisdom and expertise.

Thyroid Conditions

Clinic Co-Founder & Medical Director

The whole body requires the thyroid hormone for energy production and metabolism, and thyroid levels are essential for balancing other hormones. Thyroid problems can result in fatigue, mental health issues, adrenal and sex hormone dysfunction, weight gain and increased risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

When thyroid disorders or antibodies towards the thyroid gland are identified early, we stand the chance of preventing the need for thyroid hormone replacement. With functional medicine, patients with inadequate thyroid function can optimize hormone levels with a comprehensive approach that includes diet, nutritional support, stress reduction, and appropriate hormonal replacement therapy.

Thyroid Conditions

Have you had your thyroid hormones checked but have been told they are “normal” despite having many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism? What if we told you that Subclinical Hypothyroidism is a real condition that we see often? There are thyroid hormone receptors on literally every cell in the body. This is why when thyroid function is suboptimal, you will exhibit many symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, hormone imbalance, increased risk of elevated cholesterol, diabetes and more.

When suboptimal thyroid function is identified early, it is much easier to restore the thyroid function. With functional medicine, patients with inadequate thyroid function can optimize hormone levels with a comprehensive approach that includes diet, nutritional support, stress reduction, and appropriate hormonal replacement therapy. You can learn more about thyroid health and our approach on our podcast episode here: “Busting Medical Myths: Your thyroid is normal”

Autoimmune Disease

Clinic Co-Founder & Medical Director

Autoimmune diseases are considered chronic, lifelong disorders by conventional medicine. When a flare-up occurs, standard treatments focus on controlling the disease progression and decreasing the symptoms. We focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of immune system dysfunction to prevent further damage and hopefully reverse some of the damage that has been done. Common root causes that we find for autoimmune disease include: gut imbalance and inflammation, food allergies and sensitivities, heavy metal toxicity, mold toxicity, chronic lyme disease, chronic viral infections, hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiency, stress and emotional trauma to name a few. If you are suffering from an autoimmune disease and are seeking answers, let us help you dig deeper and find the root cause.

Conditions treated:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Celiac disease
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Grave’s disease
  • Lupus
  • Sjogren’s syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome

Autoimmune Disease

Do you refuse to accept that you have to suffer from autoimmunity for life? We do too. Conventional medicine tells us that once you are diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, you will be on those medications forever and that your condition cannot be put into remission.  However, research has shown that there are many factors that contribute to immune system dysregulation including gut imbalance and inflammation, food allergies and sensitivities, heavy metal toxicity, mold toxicity, chronic lyme disease, chronic viral infections, hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiency, stress and emotional trauma. When we address the underlying cause of inflammation and immune system dysregulation, we begin to see antibody levels decrease meaning that the body is no longer creating antibodies to its own tissues. You can learn more about autoimmune conditions and our approach on our podcast episode here: “Busting Medical Myths: Autoimmune conditions can’t be reversed.

Neurological Health

Cognitive and neurologic diseases are very prevalent, and these conditions are very complex and multifactorial in nature. There are a variety of factors that trigger or exacerbate brain disorders, including imbalances in the gut, hormones, toxins, infections, and more. Functional medicine can help treat many Neurological conditions, including:

Neurological Health

More adults are reporting cognitive decline at an earlier age. They describe feeling like they can’t remember simple things, they suffer from brain fog, thier word recall is poor and overall their cognition is sluggish. There are a variety of factors that contribute to this including imbalances in the gut, hormones imbalances, toxins & poor detoxification, chronic infections, and more. Our clients report dramatic improvement even with the simplest of interventions. Here are some neurological symptoms and conditions that we treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress

Chronic Health Issues

There are some patients who have genetic factors that put them at greater risk for developing chronic conditions. While genetic predisposition is one determinant, it isn’t the only one, and it’s crucial to realize that gene expression is heavily influenced by our environment (6). In simplified terms, your genetics load the weapon, while your environment pulls the trigger.

By means of functional medicine, we are able to prevent and manage chronic conditions at the best level, and we take steps every day to ensure the highest standard of care.

Chronic Health Issues

Society has sold us the lie that disease is a normal part of life as we get older. We have been conditioned to accept that we are supposed to be tired, overweight, anxious, depressed and suffer from poor sleep or brain fog. This is simply NOT TRUE!!! While genetics does play a role in predisposition to disease, having the genetics for the disease does NOT mean you are destined to develop that particular disease. In Functional Medicine, we live by the saying “Genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger.” So what does that mean exactly? It means that your ENVIRONMENT (i.e. your stress levels, the food you eat, the toxins you are exposed to, the antibiotics you take, how much water you drink, etc.) tells your genes what to do.  SO, let’s stop believing the lie that we are doomed to a particular diagnosis because “it runs in the family” and let’s start focusing on ways to optimize overall wellness instead! You can learn more about chronic fatigue and our approach in our podcast episode here: “Busting Medical Myths: Daily fatigue is a part of life.” Or learn about how toxins affect our health and chronic disease in our podcast episode here: “Busting Medical Myths: Toxins aren’t affecting our health.”

Sarah Campbell, MPAS, PA-C

Clinic Co-Founder & Functional Medicine Provider

Sarah has had the privilege to practice as a board-certified Physician Assistant for eight years. She has worked in many different settings: inpatient hospital setting, family medicine clinic, skilled nursing facilities, and surgery.

Over the years, she began to notice people were getting sicker {ranging from random illnesses to very severe illnesses} at a higher frequency and a much younger age. This bothered Sarah because as she was treating younger patients who should be healthy, they were far from it. Yet, when she ran all of the tests that she knew to run at the time, they all came back normal. This left both her and the patient feeling frustrated because she had no explanations for what they were experiencing even though she believed them 100% about the things that were ailing them {joint pain, chronic fatigue, bloating, abdominal pain, weight gain despite dieting, brain fog, random/recurring fevers, poor focus, etc}. She continued to see these patients and only had prescriptions {band-aids that covered the real root issue} to offer them.

It wasn’t until her own family started on a difficult journey with her children that she began to find answers. She has three children, and right before her youngest was born, she and her husband noticed that their middle child was starting to have tantrums and meltdowns all the time. He would tantrum every 3-5 minutes and wake up 4 – 5 times per night; he was chronically constipated with very pale skin and dark circles under his eyes. He battled recurrent ear infections and was not able to communicate his needs effectively, which resulted in even more tantrums. They finally got a diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder for their son, and things started to make sense. But, they found themselves in survival mode. Sarah then heard about Functional Medicine from a friend. At first, she was skeptical, but she knew they needed to do something. So she sought out help from a Functional Medicine provider. They began their journey with testing, diet changes, and supplementation. Within 3 weeks of his diet changes, his teacher at school said, “he is a completely different kid in class… he is actually talking to other kids and participating. He is starting to smile now in class!” At home, they also saw improvements. His tantrums were significantly less frequent, he only woke up 1-2 times a night, and when he did wake up, he went right back to sleep.

It was a miracle!! Thus began Sarah’s obsession with Functional Medicine and how it applies to behavioral health for children and teens and chronic ailments for adults.

Sarah has had the privilege to treat numerous families, children, and adults to find the root causes of their complex ailments and behavioral/developmental delays. Sarah considers herself honored that God chose her to be the vessel for healing for so many people, and it is her passion to advocate and educate for true health and well-being for all.
